Adolescent SBIRT Toolkit for Providers

Resource Type

A recent research study suggests that providing anticipatory guidance, screening, and intervention (SBIRT) can have an impact on teen substance use and decrease the number of youth who initiate substance use and increase quit rates among those who have just begun to use. The Adolescent SBIRT Toolkit for Providers was developed in 2015 by The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, Division of Child and Adolescent Services, and the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project. The toolkit’s goal is to provide up-to-date guidance on research-informed practices to address substance use, including providing anticipatory guidance, accurate brief medical advice, brief motivational interventions, and successful referrals. The toolkit introduces sample screening questions, algorithms, a variety of scenarios, advice for parents. The appendices in the toolkit  contain sample cases that can be used for “hands-on” practice of brief interventions and making referrals, types of treatment programs and decision-making support.
